We were there…

And never in my life have I wanted to be just a few inches taller.

What an incredible few days. I don’t think I ever thought that I would go to an inauguration. When you make the list of events you’d like to attend in your lifetime it’s often a performing artist (U2 or Etta James or Van Morrison or The Police) or a sporting event (Wimbledon, a national championship, the World Cup). I don’t usually think of a political event. But now, this feels like the most amazing gift to have been here. We held hands and cried. I thought the quartet’s performance was terrific. (I think it was a riff on an Aaron Copeland piece. Part of the melody sounded so familiar, but I wasn’t sure if it was off of Appalachian Spring, which would be interesting given Obama’s take on this figurative winter we are in.) I loved Joesph Lowery’s benediction. Gotta love a good southern preacher. Obama’s oath was such a tiny fraction of the day. Even so, you couldn’t miss the fact that the world has changed.

There were literally millions of people. It was much, much colder than it looked on TV. And I can’t imagine being anywhere else…

Gail - Paige,
Oh – thank you so much for sharing this beautiful images on your blog! It’s easy to get a bit desensitized about the inaugural crowd until you hear a first-hand account such as yours. What beautiful images. I love DC and told my husband that if you’ve never been, you just can’t fathom the idea of seeing a wall of people from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol Building!

Envious of your magical afternoon. Mine was spent watching MSNBC while crammed in a conference room with co-workers over our lunches – nevertheless, none of us will forget where we were on this day!

Erin Cady - So somehow I didn’t know you were in DC for this and now I am incredibly jealous! :) I was glued to the TV the entire day and the whole thing just felt magical. I can’t imagine what it felt like being there. These are wonderful images and I think I may rack your brain on the plane this week so you can tell me all about it… ;)
